Basic Info
Name:Benton Fraser
Bio

Benton Fraser
Name: Benton Fraser
Original canon: due South
Age: 32
Race: Human
Physical description: Tall and broad-shouldered. He has dark hair and blue-gray eyes, and his face is usually set in an earnest expression. He dresses in a way that most would describe as shabby, in worn jeans and boots, with even more worn sweaters which are too warm for Miranda, but it's hard to find modest clothing where he lives.
Background information
Fraser was born and raised on Oublie. His earliest years were surprisingly happy, given the fact that his father was almost never around. Sadly, this happiness died along with his mother, who was killed in an act of revenge by one of his father's most hated enemies. Fraser was then sent to live with his grandparents, who maintained a traveling library that serviced the small, native communities of Oublie. Since this often meant his grandparents had to stay long enough in each community to teach the people there to read, Fraser was able to form a few strong friendships along the way, most notably with a native boy named Innusiq, and a strapping settler lad by the name of Mark, who went on to play sports professionally on Miranda. Fraser still dearly misses them both.

When Fraser's father returned, it was to groom him for life as Greycoat - maintaining the right. Also, being as lonely and miserable as possible at all times. Indirectly, Fraser's father taught him to deprive himself of the things that might make him weak - openness, emotionally vulnerability, and the expectation that the good things in life will stick around long enough to provide lasting happiness. He also taught him to survive in a frozen wilderness, to fire a gun, and to assist those who cannot help themselves.

When Fraser's father was killed at a far away outpost under mysterious circumstances, Fraser mourned him by investigating his death to the fullest extent available to him. He was relentless, following clues that led him to those in positions of power in the mafia groups that really control Oublie. From there he uncovered corruption in the Greycoats themselves, who had brokered deals with the mafia - at first in the interests of mutual gain, ie, money in exchange for leaving the outskirt communities out of the mafia's circle of control. Fraser couldn't stand the idea of bowing to the corrupt mafia, even for the sake of peace, and was forced to leave Oublie and settle elsewhere. The only reason he wasn't killed was out of respect for his father, whose legacy was strong enough to save his son.

It took every bit of Fraser's savings to buy himself a trip off of Oublie to Miranda, where he lives in Siam. He managed to find a job working at a bookstore run by an elderly fellow named Mort, who remembers what the neighborhood had been like before the 'riffraff' moved in. Fraser finds some happiness in working there, as it reminds him of his grandparents, but he longs for the days when he was allowed to bring wrongdoers to justice.
Personality
Fraser is Good to the point of obstinance. Unless someone's life is in immediate danger, he will not break the law, not even to jaywalk across a deserted street. He expects the same from everyone else, despite being given almost no reason to do so from them, especially in a place like Siam. He's perceptive, but he is also determined to see the good in people, and he will even allow himself to be taken advantage of if it helps someone else in the end. He manages to be completely open in terms of helpfulness, and almost completely closed off to others emotionally, though he is always friendly and polite. This stems largely from his experience that no one worth knowing stays around. Despite this, Fraser is a classic romantic. He believes in goodness and virtue and love, even if he isn't sure love will ever find him.

Which is not to say that Fraser can't get angry when he perceives a wrong, or even pissy when tested or pushed. He tries to stay impassive and polite, but no one can keep that up forever.
